MILTON — WWII Army veteran Milton Owens and his wife, Rose, can get around their home better thanks to some local Good Samaritans.

Milton, 96, and Rose have lived here since 1998, and the couple have faced health challenges in the 22 years they've been married. Milton, who recently had pneumonia, has COPD, heart and kidney problems, diabetes, and is going blind, Rose said.

Woodbine United Methodist Church volunteers found a way to make life easier for the couple during their April 30 Faith in Action event, where the church replaces normal Sunday services for a day of community service.

Volunteers constructed a ramp at the Owens' Washington Street home. About 20 people spent three hours on the project, according to Milton.

“They did an outstanding job," he said. "They were very nice, Christian-hearted people.”
