'A fierce competitor' moves on

MILTON — Central High School’s Haley Gauthier is headed to The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee.

Gauthier is expected to add immediate depth to the Division III Sewanee university’s volleyball offense, according to Head Volleyball Coach Shawna Sauls Laurendine.

“I have been so impressed with Gauthier’s work ethic and ability throughout the volleyball camps that I have seen her participate in,” Laurendine said.

Gauthier lettered for the Jaguars for the past five years in volleyball, basketball and four years in softball. Her athletic accomplishments in these sports include selection as Most Valuable Player, resetting the school record for most points in a single season in basketball, best offensive player for all three sports, as well as earning a spot on both the 2016-2017 All-Star Volleyball and Basketball squads for Northwest Florida.

 Central Varsity Volleyball Coach Michelle Smith is confident that Gauthier will thrive at the next level of collegiate competition.

“Gauthier has always been a fierce competitor in all her athletic competitions,” she said. “She is a positive example both on the court and in the classroom.”

Gauthier completed her high school academic career with honors and ranked in the Top 10 of her graduating class.

The University of the South sits atop the Cumberland Plateau between Nashville and Chattanooga. The Division III program is also a member of the Southern SAA Athletic Association. The Tigers’ 2016 volleyball season ended with 9-17 overall record with 2-12 in SAA action. 

Gauthier is ready to be a part of the four-year program at Sewanee.

“I am so excited to be a part of a great volleyball team, meet new people and enjoy the beautiful Tennessee area,” she said.
