Timeline of Tom Coughlin’s career with the Jaguars:

Feb. 21, 1994: Coughlin is hired as the first coach of the expansion Jaguars at the age of 47, following three seasons as the coach at Boston College (21-13-3). He also was an NFL assistant with the New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers.

Dec. 22, 1996: After a 4-12 opening season in 1995, the Jaguars beat Atlanta 19-17 to cap a five-game winning streak and make the playoffs.

Jan. 4, 1997: A week after beating Buffalo 30-27 in a wild-card game, the Jaguars stun heavily-favored Denver 30-27 at Mile High Stadium to reach the AFC championship game the following week at New England.

Jan. 12, 1997: The Jaguars lose to the Patriots 20-6.

Jan. 15, 2000: After a 14-2 regular season, the Jaguars rout Miami 62-7 at home to reach the AFC championship game. It remains the high-water mark in team history.

Jan. 23, 2000: The Jaguars are upset by Tennessee 33-14 in the AFC championship game.

Dec. 30, 2002: A day after losing to Indianapolis 20-13 to cap a second 6-10 season in a row, Coughlin is fired by owner Wayne Weaver. He had a 19-29 record in his last three seasons as the Jags’ coach and was 68-60 overall, with four trips to the playoffs.

Jan. 5, 2016: After 12 seasons, two Super Bowl victories and a 102-90 record with the New York Giants, Coughlin resigns as the coach.

Jan. 9, 2017: After the Jaguars compile a 17-63 record under Mike Mularkey and Gus Bradley, Jaguars owner Shad Khan hires Coughlin as the senior vice president for football operations, overseeing general manager Dave Caldwell and coach Doug Marrone.

Jan. 14, 2018: The Jaguars beat Pittsburgh 45-42 to reach the AFC championship game, one year and five days after Coughlin is hired. The Jags lead New England in the fourth quarter of the AFC championship game the following week but lose 24-20.

April 24, 2019: After a 5-11 season in 2018, Coughlin criticizes players who did not attend voluntary organized team activities. He is sent a warning letter by the NFL admonishing him for pressuring players to attend voluntary activities.

Sept. 15, 2019: After a 13-12 loss at Houston, Coughlin criticizes cornerback Jalen Ramsey for a sideline altercation with coach Doug Marrone during the game. The next day, Ramsey requests a trade and later, on podcasts, implies that Coughlin made him “feel like a bum” and that the Jags front office “didn’t care to understand … this generation of guys … as players or as people in general.”

Oct. 15, 2019: The Jaguars trade Ramsey to the Los Angeles Rams for two first-round draft picks and a fourth-round pick. In a statement, Coughlin said, “Jalen was a productive player but the time came to move on.”

Nov. 27, 2019: Coughlin holds a rare news conference and in his first public statements since the NFL draft, said the team needed “everyone pulling in the same direction” and implored fans to turn out for the remaining home games. When asked if he would return the next season, Coughlin ducked the question by saying, “We have five games to go.”

Dec. 16, 2019: The NFL Players Association leaks an email it sent to all NFL players that a Jaguars player (later identified as former defensive end Dante Fowler) had $700,000 rescinded because the team had fined him 25 times in violation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement for missing offseason rehabilitation appointments. The letter also said that 25 percent of the grievances filed by NFL players have been by Jaguars players since Coughlin took over as senior vice-president and stated, “you, as players, may want to consider this when you have a chance to select your next club.”

Dec. 18, 2019: Coughlin is fired by Khan, with two games remaining in the season.
