SPEAK OUT: 'Hear our cries' regarding flooding; Milton, 'move on'

Here are featured comments from our Speak Out hotline, discussions on www.srpressgazette.com and its sister websites.

A BAD SITUATION

My livestock had to be moved one by one. They were hip deep in water. I have children and I won't let them go outside for fear of snakes or whatever else could be in the water and make them sick. I lost poultry.

This is my livelihood.

Right now, all of my livestock and their guardian are in my backyard unable to go back to their pasture because of the water. It is still here. It’s still high.

I contacted public works twice. I haven't heard anything back (as of this writing).

The mosquitoes are very bad now. German roaches are coming in the house. Frogs everywhere. It is stressful. It’s yucky.

We still have to go [through] the water to get to my brooder. It’s just a bad situation all the way around.

HEAR OUR CRIES

I, too, live in Metron Estates. My house was spared this time (June, 2017) although 3 inches of water lapped at my bedroom wall at the top of the driveway.

My barn in the back yard was not, as water flowed like a river through it.

I live right at the drain on Easter Street. You know, the one that is inadequate to handle even a moderately heavy rainstorm, let alone the one we had recently.

A few years ago, when we had "the great flood" my home was not so lucky. Water came in and flooring had to be replaced. I'm still living with the damaged furniture from that flood as I'm scared to buy new furniture until something is done to fix the drainage on our street.

Hear our cries of help!

MILTON, MOVE ON

Downtown Milton has nothing to offer anyone. It is a depressing place to go.

Milton needs to get over itself and move on, into the 21st century. Build a four-lane modern road [through] town, with parks and walkways. Attract some tourist-type business and restaurants to the downtown area.

We might then have a vibrant downtown area that someone would actually want to visit.
