The residents of Santa Rosa County have spoken, and they’ve chosen a new name for the school being built on Elkhart Drive in Navarre.
By a margin of nearly 2:1, residents have chosen to name the new school East Bay K-8 School. The names Edgewood K-8 School and Elkhart K-8 School came in second and third place, respectively.
East Bay is the name of the body of water north of U.S. 399, near the new school’s location.

School district staff will recommend the name to the school board at its Thursday night meeting.
Joey Harrell, assistant superintendent of administration, told the News Journal on Tuesday that the new school’s name was chosen as the result of an electronic survey that was open to anyone and everyone.

“We notified all of the schools and the schools did call-outs to the parents and to anybody who’s in the call-out system,” Harrell said. “The survey was also posted online, so anyone could have taken it.”
More than 2,000 votes were cast in the online survey.
Meanwhile, construction of the new school is moving along on schedule. The framing of most of the buildings have been complete, and construction crews are now working on concrete pouring, masonry, duct work and structural steel.
The $38 million school is slated to open by the fall of 2022 and will serve approximately 1,300 students. It’s the first full new school building to be constructed in the district since Jay High School was reconstructed in 2009.
