MILTON — Councilwoman Ashley Lay resigned during Tuesday night’s City Council meeting.
With tears in her eyes and “mixed feelings,” she said, she decided to end her term as a council member, citing personal reasons. Lay served on the council for approximately three years.
Mayor Wesley Meiss and all council members expressed their gratitude for her time on the council. When asked what would change her mind, Lay said it was out of control and she has a baby to look out for.
Meiss said Lay has left an impact on the community, and the council would continue to turn to her for advice.
“We can replace you, but you won’t be replaced,” Meiss said.
According to City Manager Brian Watkins, the city will now advertise the open position and accept applications. Once applications are acquired, the city clerk will review them and pass the qualified candidates on to the council for consideration.
Lay agreed to finish the week and have her resignation take effect Oct. 15, giving the council ample time to find a replacement within the 30-day requirement.
