MILTON — The AARP Foundation, the charitable arm of AARP, will provide free income tax filing assistance to low to moderate income taxpayers with a special emphasis on those over the age of 60.
The AARP Tax Aide program will provide the services at 12 sites in Santa Rosa and Escambia counties running from Feb. 1 until April 15.
“Neither our volunteers nor taxpayers need be members of AARP,” said Stephen Takeuchi, district coordinator. “The tax aide program is jointly sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service and the AARP Foundation.”
The service is part of a national program sponsored by the IRS referred to as Tax Counseling for the Elderly when it was started in 1968.
There are two components, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly. VITA targets low-income taxpayers with a special emphasis on the earned income tax credit. TCE targets low to moderate-income taxpayers with emphasis on those over 60.
The IRS recruits nonprofit organizations to co-sponsor the VITA and TCE programs. The AARP Foundation co-sponsors the AARP Tax Aide program with the IRS and has 35,000 volunteers trained in tax law nationwide.
