An officer with the Milton Police Department shot a suspect accused of robbing the Santa Rosa County Federal Credit Union in Milton on Monday morning.
The suspect sustained injuries that are not life-threatening and was transported to a local hospital, according to spokeswoman Pamela Holt.
Following standard procedure in the wake of an officer-involved shooting, the officer is expected to be on paid administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the shooting, according to Milton Police Chief Tony Tindell.
Authorities had not released the name of the officer nor of the suspect as of 10 a.m. Monday.
The shooting occurred shortly after 8 a.m. An armed bank robbery was reported to law enforcement at 7:58 a.m. at the credit union on Stewart Street.
The bank is across the road from King Middle School, and Milton police officers who were already on "school duty" rushed to the nearby bank, Holt said.
One officer witnessed the suspect exit the bank on foot and flee north on Byron Street. The officer chased the suspect as the suspect threw cash over their shoulder, toward the pursuing officer.
When the suspect turned around and faced the officer, the officer shot at the suspect, striking the "hip area," Holt said.
King Middle School, Hobbs Middle School and W.H. Rhodes Elementary School were placed on lockdown at 8:10 a.m., according to Santa Rosa County School District Suuperintendent Tim Wyrosdick.
Milton High School was put on "secured facility" status after law enforcement informed the school district of the situation.
By 8:20 a.m. Monday, Wyrosdick said the district was informed the incident had been resolved, and operations resumed as normal at the four schools.
