MILTON — The Guy Thompson Community Center has been been a place for the community to come and enjoy festivities for years. Soon it will become a place of art thanks to a decision made by the current city council.
At the Dec. 3 council meeting, city manager Randy Jorgenson presented council with a proposal to paint a mural on the gym wall of the Guy Thompson Community Center.
"Staff at the community center has been looking for several years at ways to make our gym more appealing."Jorgenson said.
According to Jorgenson the public works department has repainted the lines on the floors and walls, which is the first time they have been done since the building was built in 2003.
The city will contract with professional painter and owner of Graphix on the Go, Randall Mcelwain for the murals.
Mcelwain said the project would consist of 10 murals which are 5 feet by 5 feet in length and one large centerpiece mural that is 10 feet by 5 feet.
Originally, the price to complete this project would cost aproximately $8,000. However, according to Mcelewain, he will donate some of his time and cover the cost of all the materials to bring the total cost of the project down to $2,950.
Mcelewain said in his bid proposal that he had previously done the mural on the Pace High School Gym wall.
"I am now a Milton local business owner and want to do my part [for Milton]," he said.
