Trump – the Wall And the national debt

Dear editor,

I think the campaign promise was that Mexico was going to pay for the Wall, and if they kept complaining about it, the Wall will be 10 feet higher than planned. So, instead of shutting down the government regarding the Wall, why not just build the amount of Wall that uses the money Mexico has sent in so far, and build the rest of the Wall, when the rest of the money comes in?

No need to spend extra USA tax dollars. Just build it as the money comes in from Mexico. Then, we will have no further increase in our national debt due to the Wall, and no detriment to our senior citizens and legitimate entitlement programs because of USA Wall spending. Makes sense to me.

Oh, the national debt? Here I think candidate Trump promised he would expect to eliminate the $20 trillion of national debt over his potential eight years in office. So first let’s remember how the debt developed. Clinton passed essentially no deficit to George W. Bush, then George W. passed about $9 trillion of debt to Obama, then after spending about $6 trillion to save the US from depression (which brought the national debt up to $15 trillion), then Obama added about another $5 trillion to get to the $20 trillion dollar debt range that was passed to Trump.

So, Trump now completing his first two years in office should be approaching $15 trillion of national debt on the way to zero by the end of his potential two terms. But — wait a minute — the news last week said the national debt was approaching $22 trillion. Oh my gosh, I think the President is running about $7 trillion in debt higher than the campaign rhetoric might have predicted.

Good news for him and bad news for us is that the news also stated last week that he’s not worried about this debt figure because when he leaves office this will be someone else’s problem. I like that, spoken like a true swamp resident.

Silly me, I thought with the Wall being totally paid for by Mexico and the national debt expected to be down by 25 percent at this time that America could really be focusing heavily on other important issues our country needs to solve.
