Santa Rosa first responders receive donation

MILTON — The Santa Rosa Sheriff's Office and Pace Fire Rescue District received $51,294 worth of equipment from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation.

According to a press release from the foundation, SRSO received 20 automated external defibrillators to be placed in patrol cars. The foundation will also provide training so the deputies can learn how to operate the new equipment. PFRD received six sets of bunker gear including coats, pants, boots and gloves to replace outdated and damaged gear.

Firehouse spokeswoman Nancy Palmer said the foundation wanted to thank the donors who help provide the tools given.

“Our first responders are our heroes and we want to be sure they have the tools and technology they need to protect their communities," she said.

Sheriff Bob Johnson said the 20 new AEDs will mean his office has enough to place one in almost every patrol car.

"They are a great piece of equipment," Johnson said. "We really appreciate this donation to us and your services to the community."

Pace Fire Chief Robbie Whitfield said he also was grateful for the new gear.

"Gear is expensive. We try to make it last," he said. "Sometimes the budget just doesn't allow us to get the equipment we need. So we appreciate the customers who donate that extra money."

Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation was founded in 2005 in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Since then, according to its website, the nonprofit organization has granted more than $40 million in 48 states, Puerto Rico and Canada — including more than $6.2 million in Florida.

A portion of every purchase at a Firehouse Subs location will be used to provide lifesaving equipment to first responders.
