EAST MILTON — Southern Raceway held a Bash at the Beach March 15 and 16 and here are the results.
Super Late Models
Corey Roberts was the class of the field Saturday night in the Southern All-Stars Super Late Models Bash at the Beach.
Roberts took the early lead from Neal Baggett in the 60-lap feature to drive off with the $7,000 prize. He held off the challenges from David Breazeale and Neal Baggett due to the eight cautions.
"I stepped on my own foot last night," Roberts said in victory lane. "This win tonight is definitely going to make the drive home a lot easier."
Rounding out the top five were Breazeale, Baggett, Riley Hickman and Zack Leonardi.
Six through 10 had a local flair to it led by Ryan Crane who recovered from a lap 10 caution to finish sixth followed by JR Mosley, Harold’s JC Wilson, Milton’s Joseph Joiner and Billy Franklin.
Other area drivers of note in Saturday’s feature were Taylor Jarvis, who finished 15th, Pace’s Matt Chavers who finished 17th and Holt’s Colton Leyendecker, who finished 18th.
On Friday, Baggett started from the pole and came back to win the race and a $3,000 check at the pay window.
Baggett held the lead until lap 15, when Brazeale worked around him.
Breazeale saw his night come to an end on lap 19, when he made contact with the slower car of Dustin Mince on the front stretch.
Breazeale’s contact with Mince damaged his radiator and forced him out of the race shortly thereafter, which caused some confusion involving Mark Whitener.
On the third attempted restart, Whitener managed to pass Breazeale for the lead, but due to a caution before the lap was complete, the field returned to the previous lap order.
As Breazeale sat atop turn one, Baggett inherited the lead.
"I almost screwed up," Baggett said. "I slowed down due to lapped traffic and got passed. When I got the lead on the restart I wasn’t going to let that happen again."
Rounding out the top five were Whitener, Jay Scott, Riley Hickman and Milton’s Joseph Joiner.
"I thought we had completed the lap and I had gotten the lead," Whitener said. "I screwed up qualifying, but when they look at the tape they will see we got the lead and were the leaders when the caution came out."
Harold’s JC Wilson, who was the youngest driver in the field both nights, finished eighth.
Other area drivers of interest were Holt’s Cody Smith, who finished 16th and Milton’s Blake Martin, who finished 18th.
Street Stock
In the Durrence Layne Street Stock division, Mike Lane started from the second row and made quick work of the field as he ran away for the win.
The big incident of the race came on lap number nine when Marvin Cuevas, Joseph Nicholson, and Justin Hamilton.
John Cody would come home to finish second, followed by James Ward, Garrett McDonald, and Cuevas who recovered from the spin to finish fifth.
Pure Stock
In the Pure Stock, John Howell shook the problems of the early preseason to get his first win.
Howell, who earlier in the day had an incident at the mud races, started fourth in the feature and by lap eight worked his way to the point and ran away from everyone.
Jessica Donaldson, the two time series champion, started ninth, but would rebound to finish second followed by Dillon Ussery, Dalton Morrison, and Christian Porter to round out the top five.
Open-Wheel Modified
Ryan Fowler put on a show in the Open-Wheel Modifieds Saturday night as he let the rest of the field battle it out for second place.
That honor went to Osman Jones, followed by Matt Chavers, James Roete, and Jackson Douglas in fifth.
Colton Leyendecker started the 602 Sportsman division from the pole and never looked back. The only issue he faced was on lap 11, when one caution led to three consecutive ones due to issues on restarts.
Matt Chavers would come home second followed by Joe Richbourg, Todd Jones, and Johnny Wright Jr.
Vintage
In the Vintage it was Ricky Haugen who said goodbye to the field after starting dead last for the win.
Haugen held off Robin Christensen for the win, followed by Don Hall and James Ward.
Things started with a bang when six to eight cars were involved in an incident at the drop of the green flag headed into turn one that brought out a red flag.
Timothy Witherington avoided all the issues as he started from the pole, while Steve Sidner was not so fortunate.
Sidner would recover to finish second followed by Tommy Lowery and his bent up hood in third.
Rounding out the top five were Thomas Owens and Cameron Connell.
Racing action will return to Southern Raceway March 23 for the 2019 season opener.
