MILTON — Milton High grad Jeffery Brewton Sr. passed away in 2008 from an aneurysm and for the past 10 years, his family has kept his legacy alive with his scholarship. This year the Guy Thompson Community Center at 5629 Byrom St. in Milton will host an event to support the scholarship fund.

The "Sweat. Savor. Support. The Jeffery Brewton Sr. Scholarship" event will take place 9 to 11 a.m. Sept. 15. Tickets are $15 and available online at www.SWEATforJBS.eventbrite.com. Call 723-5895 or 736-1976 for more information.

The two-hour event is designed to move, nourish and take care of attendees' bodies, said Deniece Griffin, Brewton's sister and certified fitness instructor. Griffin is the founder of Grown & Fit in Atlanta, Ga., she will be leading the class for the event.

Griffin will take participants through a full-body workout designed for all fitness levels. After the workout the University of Florida IFAS Extension – Santa Rosa County will provide simple and healthy snack options. Florida A&M University College of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences will provide health screenings services for glucose, blood pressure and BMI.

In addition, Men With Vision, a local men's organization, will provide voter registration information.

Larry Brewton was Jeffery Brewton's older brother.

"Jeff exemplified the core values of family, education, friendship and hard work," Larry said. "As an executive with Chevron Oil Company, he made it possible for many deserving and talented engineering students to be recruited by top level corporations. That is why this scholarship means so much to our family to carry on his legacy."

Griffin said she appreciates the University of Florida and Florida A&M University for partnering in this event.

"To think they didn't even know my brother, but they are willing to donate their time and resources to help with this scholarship," she said, "is what community is all about."

Brewton was the seventh of 10 children growing up in Milton. He graduated from MHS in 1975 and received an engineering degree from Tuskegee University, according to the Jeffery Brewton Memorial Engineering Scholarship website at http://www.jefferybrewtonscholarship.com.

"Jeffery had a strong love of education and kids and wanted to give back," said Rev. Murray Hamilton, Brewton's brother-in-law.

Jeffery helped himself through his education and ascended the ranks of Chevron Oil Company to have a prestigious international career, according to Hamilton. When he reached that pinnacle, he wanted to give back Hamilton said.

According to his scholarship memorial webpage, Jeffery loved and supported Tuskegee University by returning to recruit deserving engineering students for Chevron. In this respect, a scholarship in his honor continues a core principle he advocated – giving back.
