MILTON — Lacrosse is a big hit in Santa Rosa County.
After officially becoming a school sport at Milton High School, it is making its way into the community of Milton. According to Parks and Recreation Director John Norton, the Milton Community Center is partnering with MHS to hold a summer lacrosse camp for the youth in the community.
Norton said they have been working with MHS for a number of years on getting a lacrosse program at the high school.
“Last year was the first year the school had a real team playing in the league,” Norton said. “Now they are coming back and helping us try to put together a program for the youth who are interested.”
Norton said the summer program is restricted to practices and drills to help players improve their skills with the game.
“It’s worked really well,” he said. “We have a lot of kids interested, and hopefully we will be able to get a team put together one day.”
David Hanley, head coach for Milton High School's boys team, is overseeing the camp this year. He said he is very excited about the turnout they have had and hopes to increase the numbers each year.
"We have about 20 kids this year, which is great," Hanley said. "We are so excited to see the interest."
