Florida Forest has authorized several prescribed burns that will be visible to motorists traveling Interstate 10 as well as one burn near Avalon Boulevard and I-10. The burn near Avalon is 1,185 acres and is being conducted by Northwest Florida Water Management, Florida Park Service and Westervelt Ecological Services.
Florida Forest Service personnel are burning an additional 5,420 acres in various parts of Blackwater River State Forest including two areas south of I-10. Winds will be out of the north northwest switching to north later today so smoke should not be an issue along I-10 or U.S. 90.
If motorists do encounter smoke on the road, they should slow down and turn on their low beam headlights. If the smoke becomes too thick, pull all the way off the pavement, stop and turn on emergency flashers.
