Brandon Aydelott will likely spend another six months in the care of the Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee before consideration is given to trying him for killing his mother.
After hearing a brief synopsis regarding efforts to bring the 17-year-old to a point where he's competent to stand trial, Circuit Judge John Simon ruled that another six months was warranted. He said he would review the case again Aug. 7.
Simon told the parties on either side of the case he would notify them before the August date if a declaration of competency was made prior to that time.
Aydelott has been charged with first degree murder. He is accused of killing his mother, Sharon Aydelott, on Christmas Eve, 2013 by bludgeoning and stabbing her. Sharon Aydelott was a popular teacher at Holley-Navarre Middle School. Brandon had been a promising pitching prospect at Gulf Breeze High School.
Public Defender Bruce Miller said that his office noticed early on that Brandon Aydelott might not be competent to stand trial and two psychological evaluations conducted after his arrest seemed to bear out that assessment. At his first competency hearing Aydelott made comments like "I'm the word" and "Time is Frozen."
He was charged after his arrest with assaulting a correction's officer, who was trying to stop him from "hitting on the cell door," a report said.
Brandon Aydelott was not present at Tuesday's hearing.
