Pace: Ames opts to play college softball for Covenant College (VIDEO)

Surrounded by family members and Pace High School officials, Madalyn Ames sign a softball scholarship with Covenant College on Thursday afternoon. Standing behind Madalyn are PHS Softball Coach Nikki Reed, Head Coach Amy Wolfenden and PHS Principal Stephen Shell. Sitting to the left of Madalyn is her father Mike, mother Trish and sister Elizabeth.

In addition to her athletic play on the softball field, bringing a upbeat mindset to the team is one of many talents Pace High School Senior Madalyn Ames will bring to Covenant College, according to her PHS softball Coach Amy Wolfenden.

“She is positive leader,” Wolfenden said. “She has that way to say ‘hey, I’m working hard so you need to work hard too’.”

In her final season with the Lady Patriots, the team has made it into the postseason this year. Ames said she will miss being a part of the team’s chemistry.

“(In) my freshmen and sophomore year, I was on the (junior varsity) team and I really got to know the upperclassmen…it was really amazing to know them and to be mentored by them,” Ames said. “On varsity, it’s been really fun being able to get to know the younger girls and being able to mentor them.”

Ames also looks to bring an optimistic attitude to Covenant, a Christian-based college located at Lookout Mountain, Georgia.

“I’m looking to bring the positivity and just the hard work ethic,” she said. “I want to continue that over there.”

Wolfenden said Ames helps the team on both offense and defense.

“She has played some infield for us, she has played some outfield for us,” Wolfenden said. “She runs bases well, she helps us get runs. She can do a lot of things to help the team.”

Wolfenden said Ames’s ability to play at multiple positions will benefit Covenant.

In addition to playing softball for the college, Ames currently plans to earn a degree in biology and eventually become a veterinarian.
