The students of Health Occupations Students of America, or HOSA, at Jay High School is seeking the community’s help to decide the first-ever ‘Hot Stuff Chili and Soup Cook Off’ on February 7. Benefits from the cook off will benefit the HOSA student association with traveling expenses to the Florida HOSA Spring Leadership Conference in Orlando.
Nina Hendricks, the school’s HOSA advisor, said it will cost between nearly $8,000 for all 34 students to attend the conference. HOSA is part of Jay’s health academy which prepares students, who are interested in pursuing a career in the medical field.
Hendricks hopes the winter-themed cook-off will be the first of many in which Jay residents can participate and attend.
“This is something that the community can enjoy,” she said.
The fundraising event will take place on February 7, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Jay United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
Tickets are pre-sale only: $10 for adults and $5 for children. These tickets can be purchased and held for anyone interested in attending at Jay High School.
Attendees will be able to sample and vote on the entries. In addition to dessert, the event will also feature “student entertainment and an auction for Valentine’s Day gift baskets in a county fair atmosphere,” Hendricks said.
“Several chili and soup recipes will be competing for the titles of Hot Stuff! Best Chili and Hot Stuff! Best Soup, and ticket holders get to sample them all,” Hendricks said.
Contestants have already submitted their recipes for the event, but a few more spots are still available. For more information contact Nina Hendricks by email at HendricksN@santarosa.k12.fl.us.
