4-H prepares for new year

Prudence Caskey, Learn by Doing

This is a very busy time of year for many of us as we plan vacations and get ready for our various duties before school starts back in August.  For Santa Rosa County 4-H, it is the time we have all been waiting for; summer means more 4-H activities.  As we approach July, we have a week-long summer camp, a day camp for our younger 4-H members and state competitive events just around the corner.   4-H is also getting ready for our new 2015-2016 4-H year.

Santa Rosa County 4-H needs you.  Many residents of Santa Rosa County are not aware of all 4-H has to offer for children.  I have heard more than once, “I didn’t know we had 4-H in this town.”  Well, let me be the first to tell you, we have a very active 4-H in Santa Rosa County. There is more to today’s 4-H than you may remember as a child as well.  The stereo-type of 4-H brings cows, plows and sows to mind but we are also barks, larks, and sparks as well as roots, shoots and newts.  If you don’t have an acre to call your own, don’t despair; SRC 4-H has something for everyone.  From aerospace technology and robotics to sports fishing and marine science there is something to offer all children ages five to 18.  If you yearn for more traditional projects, we have very active livestock clubs as well as many cooking and craft clubs.

Our 4-H is in building mode this time of the year.  Each 4-H year ends August 31 and starts fresh and new on September 1.  We have clubs in Jay and Navarre and everywhere in between.  On August 29, 2015, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Santa Rosa County 4-H will be holding an open house at the SRC Extension office located at 6263 Dogwood Drive.   If you would like to know more about 4-H or would be interested in volunteering, we want to hear from you.  Come check out why we say we are not your grandmother’s 4-H.  Mark your calendar to stop by and meet current 4-H members and volunteers.  There will also be a presentation at 4 p.m. on how you can start a 4-H club in Santa Rosa County and how you can help other children enjoy their 4-H experiences.
