Basketball: Milton’s Fountain opts for Faulkner State (VIDEO)

Edwin Fountain of Milton High School holds a jersey from Faulkner State Community College after signing basketball scholarship with the community college on Wednesday morning.

In addition to showing his skills on the basketball court, it’s the character and academic accomplishments which led Faulkner State Community College to offer Edwin Fountain of Milton High School a full-ride basketball scholarship.

“What we are really impressed with is the character he has,” said Jack Robertson, Faulkner’s basketball coach and athletic director. “He is a well-mannered nice young man, that is very important to us and he is good academically. He will fit in good with us just fine.”

Robertson, who’s served as the basketball coach at the school for the past 43 years, said Fountain’s play on the court caught not only his attention, but the attention of those around him.

“My wife even said he could play…and when she says it I better listen,” Robertson said.

Fountain’s coach at Milton High School, Hank Hullett, said Edwin’s presence on the team will be missed.

“He came to us early in the year,” Hullett said. “I wished we had more time with him because he is such a great person.”

Fountain, who recently moved to the area from Georgia, only played one season with the Panther varsity basketball team. Although he was a Panther for a short time, Fountain said his new teammates made him feel welcome this season.

“My experience here has been great, I have felt accepted from the moment I got here,” Fountain said. “The team brought me in like I was one of their own.”

Fountain said he looking forward to learning from his experience at the community college in Bay Minette, Alabama.

“I just felt comfortable with the environment and the coach,” Fountain said. “I look forward to what he will be able to teach me and hopefully I will able to grow and become a better player from his program.”

In addition to playing college basketball, Fountain is also considering pursuing a degree in sports medicine. Whatever the future has in store, Hullett believes Fountain will bring the same enthusiasm he brought to the Panther basketball team.

“This is a kid that has all of the potential in the world,” Hullett said. “He is passionate about whatever he does and I hope he takes that with him wherever he goes from there.”
