WHAT: American Legion Post 78 Grand Reopening

WHEN: From 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 18

WHERE: 6025 Spikes Way in Milton

After enduring heavy flood damage in April of last year and a massive volunteer effort from Home Depot, the American Legion Post #78 in Milton is returning to normalcy with a grand re-opening today.

The community is invited to attend the event which will feature a ribbon cutting ceremony from the Santa Rosa County Chamber of Commerce and the installation of new officers for the 2015-2016 year. Free refreshments, including hot dogs and possibly fried fish, will be available. The American Legion will also be accepting donations at the event.

John Everitt, the local American Legion Post’s adjutant and financial officer, said nearly 100 Home Depot volunteers worked at the Spikes Way location in late January. The volunteers provided much needed landscape work, repairing flood damage inside the main building along with upgrading the facility with new appliances and a fire pit and a picnic pavilion.

“We wouldn’t be where we are today without Home Depot,” Everitt said.

Everitt said this event will allow the American Legion to thank the community for their support. Everitt said Avalon Baptist Church allowed the organization to use their facility for regular meetings.

Everitt said the American Legion will also use the opportunity to welcome retired military veterans to learn more about their organization and how they benefit the local community through volunteering through with local ROTC programs in area schools, Special Olympics and more.

“There is so many community programs, but we need more people,” Everitt said.
