‘Miracle 4 Mason’ benefit collects $1,600 for Milton teen

Cantonment resident Michael Carroll, right, puts his arm around Mason Roland, after the 14 year old Pace resident selected his motorcycle as ‘Mason’s Choice’ during the ‘Miracle 4 Mason’ benefit on Saturday at The Cove Pub in Milton.

Pace resident Mason Roland, 14, and his mother, Cecily Newton, will have an additional $1,600 to help cover medical expenses following an upcoming kidney transplant.

The funds were raised during Saturday’s ‘Miracle 4 Mason’ benefit at The Cove Pub in Milton.

“We had a bike show and all kinds of fun,” Roland said. “It was awesome, everybody was so nice. I loved it; I met a lot of great people.

Roland is diagnosed with cystinosis, a rare genetic metabolic disease, in which the buildup of amino acid could lead to kidney failure.

“I need a kidney transplant, I am on dialysis,” Mason said.

Several area motorcycle enthusiasts came to support Mason by participating in a bike show at the pub. Six motorcycles entered the fundraiser in which top placing trophies were available. One of the categories was named ‘Mason’s Choice’ in which Mason chose his favorite motorcycle.

Mason chose a motorcycle owned by Michael Carroll. The Cantonment resident was honored by Mason’s selection.

“It was the coolest honor ever, because he is coolest kid,” Carroll said. ‘He is like a little Superman, he’s fighting hard.”

Carroll showed his appreciation for Roland by giving him a Superman cape along with some comic books, a favorite reading pass time for Mason.

Newton was very appreciative of the efforts of their friends Misty and Ken Smith, who helped organize the event.

“I am extremely blessed that Misty and Ken put this on for Mason,” she said. “Once I saw all of the people that are supporting us are here, it’s just amazing.”

Newton said donations from the event are much appreciated.

“I have already used my 401K and my savings, everything, and I’m only working part time,” she said.

While Roland waits for news on his new kidney, he and his mother will travel to Tampa for the procedure.

Ken Smith is thankful for everyone who attended and contributed towards the cause.

All of the funds will be donated to Mason’s fundraising account at the Pen Air Federal Credit Union.  Online donations are also being accepting on Giveforward.com at bit.ly/1sz1qw8.
