August Florida Trail Association Calendar

Aug 1 First Friday Dinner Hike, from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at  Vickrey Community Center, 2130 Summit Blvd # B, Pensacola.  We will meet in the parking lot on the side where the swimming pool and dog parks are (note that the dog parks are closed, however).  Watch for FTA Event signs. Today we will hike part of the LEAP Trail and will walk to and from its beginning point at the Hyatt Place where we will stop for dinner. This will give us a chance to explore this new fitness trail and the newest of our local hotels by the airport. Aug 3  Wake-Up Hike 7 a.m. at St. Christopher's 12th Avenue and Anderson, Pensacola. Look for blue Honda Odyssey with Hike on the front. Get the day started with Trudy and/or Peggy with a brisk walk and afterwards join us for breakfast. We will walk about an hour, about 1 to 3 miles. We will be hiking/walking at different locations each Sunday morning. Aug 17 at Coldwater Creek Paddle, FTA members only paddle – 9 a.m. Meet in the parking lot at the Shell Station/Subway Restaurant in Milton at 5462 Stewart St. (on the corner of Hwy. 87 N. and Hwy. 191 (Munson Hwy.) at 8:45 a.m. and be ready to car caravan to the put-in spot at the bridge at Coldwater Recreation Area in Munson.  The Coldwater River has a gentle current and clear, tannin colored water. There are plenty of places to swim & get cooled off. Wide sandbars are at almost every bend to play on. This is an easy river for beginning paddlers. Bring your canoe/kayak, paddle, PFD (Personal Floatation Device), whistle, extra clothing, water shoes, hat, sunglasses, raingear, sunscreen, camera, water, lunch, etc. Well-behaved pets are welcome. Alcohol and glass containers are not permitted on the river. Alcohol and glass containers are NOT allowed on the river. Aug 21 Western Gate Chapter Meeting at 6:30 p.m. social, 7 pm meeting at First Christian Church, 6031 Goodrich Dr. Pensacola, Florida 32504. This is our monthly chapter meeting where we talk and meet and discuss past activities and report on new activities. We also usually have a short program that has to do with hiking, camping and/or the outdoors. There are also refreshments. Aug 24 Paddle Juniper Creek; FTA members only paddle – 8.45 a.m. Participants will paddle about 6.1 miles on beautiful Juniper Creek from Red Rock Road to Indian Ford Road. Meet in the parking lot at the Shell Station/Subway Restaurant in Milton at 5462 Stewart St. (on the corner of Hwy. 87 N. and Hwy. 191 (Munson Hwy) at 8:45 a.m. and be ready to car caravan promptly at 9:00 am to the put-in at the bridge on Red Rock Road.  Juniper Creek has a gentle current and clear, tannin colored water.
