Small Steps to Health and Wealth: Take the Challenge

Every January, millions of Americans resolve to get healthier and/or wealthier. With more than one-third of American adults weighing in as obese and an average national credit card debt of $15,000 per household, it’s time to put resolve into action.  Small steps are the key to lasting change and there’s a new online program that can help.  The Small Steps to Health and Wealth Challenge begins on February 2.  Once you join the free challenge, you’ll find 10 daily recommended practices (5 nutrition-related and 5 finance-related) to follow for the next 8 weeks.  Track your activities, collect points for each one you do each day, and qualify to win great prizes. Call 623-3868 or visit njaes.rutgers.edu and follow the challenges link for more information. If you have a question, please call The University of Florida/IFAS Extension Santa Rosa County, at 623-3868, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays.  Extension Service programs are open to all people without regard to race, color, sex, age, handicap or national origin.

Volunteer coaches needed for Special Olympics

While athletes are at the heart of our organization, volunteers are its backbone. New Soccer, Tennis, Volleyball and Athletics programs are kicking off in Santa Rosa County and our program is in need of volunteer coaches. Knowledge of the sports listed is great but not required. Volunteers commit one to two hours of their time per week for training from February to mid May. This is a great experience for any age group: high school or college students with a desire to earn volunteer hours, professionals who want to share their unique skills, or retirees who have a passion for their community. Our volunteers work directly with our athletes to teach them the skills, spirit and sportsmanship that define a true athlete. Because athletes and their families are never charged a fee to participate in Special Olympics, volunteers play a critical role in showcasing each athlete’s skills as they embrace sports and shatter stereotypes about people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. If you have questions or are interested in becoming a volunteer, please email us at Volunteer@SpecialOlympicsEscambia.org or call 232-9275 for more information.
