Honoring the American Flag

Ray Rognstad, a member of the American Legion Post 78, places the American Flag on the burning fire in a ceremony to retire flags that are no longer serviceable.

Flag Day is celebrated nationally on June 14th to commemorate the adoption of the American Flag. It is also customary a day established to retire flags that are no longer a fitting emblem for display. The United States Flag Code states, “The flag should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

Milton’s American Legion Hall Post 78 sponsored a Flag Burning Ceremony Saturday, June 14th.

The members of the Post 78 American Legion Hall recognize the importance of what the American Flag represents for those who have desired the taste of freedom, and the hope that the flag displays.

“We as Veterans organize this ceremony to demonstrate our respect for those who gave their lives or those who served our country by protecting the American Flag,” stated Ray Rognstad.  Rognstad, served in the Marine Core. He spent two winters in Korea and was part of the last military unit allowed into Cuba.  “This ceremony is the correct and proper way of disposing of an American Flag,” he continued. “We don’t want to see the flag just thrown away.”
