State Attorney Bill Eddins announced today that Duane Scott Nancarrow, age 47, of Milton was convicted on Monday, March 3, 2014, by a Santa Rosa County Jury of Aggravated Stalking. Sentencing is set for April 16, 2014 before Circuit Judge John Simon who also presided over the trial. Nancarrow faces a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison.
On December 14, 2012, the day of the Newtown, Connecticut, school shooting, Nancarrow called Monument Academy Charter School in Monument, Colorado, and left a message stating, “You watch the TV and see what’s going on in Connecticut, that could happen there, too.” Nancarrow was targeting a teacher at Monument Academy who was a friend of Nancarrow’s ex-wife. Monument Academy Principal Liz Richard testified that Nancarrow’s call triggered a “lock down” at the school, sending elementary and preschool children into dark, cramped bathrooms where they had to be completely silent until the threat could be verified. Local authorities in El Paso County, Colorado, contacted the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office in Florida in an attempt to ascertain Nancarrow’s whereabouts. Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office Detective Ed Vincent obtained Nancarrow’s phone records which revealed that the calls were placed from Santa Rosa County. Those records also showed that Nancarrow had called Monument Academy teacher Richard Hart over 40 times and had made 12 calls to the school. Each time Nancarrow called he left obscene and threatening messages including a recorded message on the school phone stating, “This is for Mr. Hart… I’ll put a bullet in your brain.” On March 21, 2013, Nancarrow was arrested by the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office and charged with Aggravated Stalking.
The investigation and arrest was conducted by the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant State Attorney Jason English prosecuted the case for the State of Florida.
