Volunteers needed to help local veterans and victims of disasters

On Saturday, September 27th Interfaith Ministries will host a training for disaster case managers in Milton at the Community of Christ Church Activity Building (6656 Raymond Hobbs Street) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a working lunch provided.

Beginning Monday, Oct 13th, three weeks of training for case managers will be offered at the Central Waterside Church office across from the Gulf Breeze Zoo, in the office complex from 6-9 pm each Monday and Thursday evening.

There are still nearly 200 families in south Santa Rosa County with unmet needs from the floods this past spring and our area is home to more than 600 veteran families in need of various assistance. Would you like an opportunity to help these struggling families?

Interfaith Ministries and POE in Action are two volunteer led organizations who help provide and oversee assistance for these families and they need more volunteer case workers.  Therefore, Jan Wilson with POE in Action has arranged for training to be available for anyone interested in volunteering to help a family transition through a challenging period and return to their normal pattern of living more safely and securely in our community,

The training classes will be 3 hours long each Monday and Thursday evening for three weeks commencing Monday, Oct 6, 2014 and ending Thursday, Oct. 23.  Each class will run from 6pm to 9 p.m. with the Monday evenings emphasis will focus on Veteran case management and Thursday evenings emphasis on Disaster case management.

All of the training will focus on providing good resources and referrals and learning how to complete accurate assessments and documentation while maintaining a loving demeanor and demonstrating understanding and respect for the client.  Participants will be required to submit to background checks and sign a confidentiality agreement. The other major prerequisite for case workers is compassion.  If you are a good listener, can communicate effectively, and enjoy helping others, then this is a perfect role for you if you are over 18 years of age.

When you have completed the training, you will be asked to volunteer 1-3 hours per week to help one of the families. Once you have prayed about this commitment, if you believe God wants you to help in this way, please call Jan Wilson at 850-341-1399 to register for the upcoming training as soon as possible as there will be a limit of twelve trainees accepted for this training.  All training and materials are provided free of charge and no financial obligation is incurred as a volunteer case worker.

If you are a veteran or someone who sincerely wants to comfort one of God’s children in our own community, please give prayerful consideration to this ministry.
