Exceptional students from 12 area schools gathered at S.S. Dixon Intermediate School for the third annual Patriot Games Tuesday.
About 260 students and volunteers attended the event, which invited schools from the north end of the county to participate. Teachers have been planning the Patriot Games all year, according to ESE Teacher Liz Williamson, S.S. Dixon Intermediate. The first half of the planning involved fundraising, and then the second half involved planning the activities, according to Williamson.
"It's a day of fun for students to get together and compete and show what they've learned all year," Williamson said. The day is not a competition. It's more a day for the students to get together and have fun.
The event featured different stations. Each of the stations had an activity for students, ranging from K-12. Some of the stations displayed refined skills fine motor skills and balancing techniques.
Members of the Pace High School Student Government Association volunteered their time, helping out at some of the event stations.
Funding for the event came through donations, according to Williamson. Buffalo Rock and Subway provided lunch for the students and volunteers. Pensacola Wahoo's mascot, Kazoo, made an appearance for the children.
"The staff and the kids have a good time," Williamson said. "It's worth all the work."
