Escambia Sheriff reporting odd events leading to man's death

Escambia Sheriff's Office Press Release

On August 19, shortly after 5 p.m., Escambia Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 14,000 block of Canal Drive.

According to witnesses, a naked man had been observed crawling across a yard and attempting to break in to several houses by throwing bricks and other objects at windows.

At one point, the man, who was disabled and had only one leg, attempted to break into an elderly couple’s home at which point he received a laceration to his arm.

The first deputy on scene arrived to discover the man still naked and covered with blood and sweat. The man had crawled across the street and was in what appeared to be a state of delirium.

As the deputy tried to subdue the man, it was realized that the man had no pulse.

EMS responded and along with law enforcement attempted to resuscitate the man, however they were unsuccessful.

Further investigation revealed that the incident began when the man, identified as 55-year-old Norbert A. Chabannes, arrived home and became confrontational with his housekeeper.

The victim stated that during the altercation, Chabannes began gouging her eyes and repeatedly banged her head against a wall.

The victim had injuries that were consistent with her statements.

The victim managed to get away and flee to a neighboring home for help.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
