An SUV rolled over on Interstate 10 this week, injuring four and causing $8,000 worth of damage in a single-vehicle accident, when the vehicle crossed the median, flipped and slid across the interstate on its roof, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.
Stacey Bass, 38 of Crestview, was heading westbound on I-10 near mile marker 33 near the Highway 87 S exit. According to the report, Bass attempted to change lanes, but then realized there was another vehicle in the lane. She over-corrected and veered into the grassy median.
The 2005 GMC Envoy with three passengers overturned in the median and continued to slide across the eastbound lanes on its roof. It eventually came to rest on the shoulder of the interstate.
Shannon Shell, 29, was heading eastbound, en route to Tallahassee. She was driving a gold Chevy truck and witnessed the roll over some 300-400 feet in front of her.
"I hit the brakes hard and the whole front of my truck dipped down," Shell said. "It looked like it rolled over at least twice, maybe three times, but no more."
Shell pulled over after witnessing the crash and called 911. She said two of the passengers got out of the vehicle on their own power. Other bystanders stopped to assist the two others out of the SUV.
Two of the passengers, Haley Bass and Natasha Davis, were transported to Santa Rosa Hospital with serious injury. The driver and remaining passenger were treated on scene for minor injuries. All four were wearing their seatbelts and alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
The driver was charged with careless driving as a result of the incident, according to FHP.
