House burglary suspects arrested within hours

The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office responded to a house burglary on Panther Drive in Milton Thursday morning. At 3:00 am, Deputies were called to a home where the resident woke up to work on the computer. The resident noticed her TV was missing among other items in the home. Her vehicle was also burglarized.

Deputies say arrived on at the home and the area was canvassed for evidence. A deputy began to circulate the area looking for any clues to the burglary. A deputy stopped at a Circle K store to ask if there were any suspicious individuals seen in the area. A witness stated they observed a male who was in the restroom for a long period of time. Deputies entered the restroom and located stolen items in the trash. The deputies then were able to look at the video to identify the suspect.

One of thedeputies on scene immediately recognized the suspect. The suspect was seen on the video utilizing the stolen credit card from the burglary. Other deputies were alert to be on the lookout for Devon Washington (suspect).

At 7:00 a.m., a deputy spotted a vehicle where Washington was the passenger. A traffic stop was conducted and contact was made. The driver was identified as Kevin Smith and the passenger was Washington. Inside the vehicle, deputies located the stolen items from the burglary including the TV, the victim’s checkbook, credit cards and identification. Narcotics and a handgun were also located inside the vehicle, according to reports.

Santa Rosa Sheriff's officials say both Washington and Smith were immediately arrested and transported to the Santa Rosa County Jail. Both suspects are being held on $36,000.00 each.
