MILTON — The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development's office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity has marked the month of April as Fair Housing Month, and a time to celebrate the 50-year anniversary of the achievements of the Fair Housing Act. It is also a time to educate the public and housing providers about their rights and responsibilities under the Fair Housing Act. In celebration of this anniversary, the Board of County Commissioners has designated the week of April 16 as Fair Housing Week in Santa Rosa County.
To help educate residents of their rights, the Santa Rosa County Housing Program office will have a display available with fair and equal housing information during the week of April 16 through April 20 at their office located at 6051 Old Bagdad Highway, Suite 201 in Milton. Residents may visit the housing program office online or call 981-7076 for more information.
Fair Housing Month marks the passage of the 1968 Fair Housing Act following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Fair Housing Act makes it illegal to discriminate in the sale or rental of housing based on race, color, sex, religion, national origin, familial status or disability.
