Deputies: Intoxicated man arrested after firing gun in neighborhood

A night of drinking and arguing between three people escalated when one man reached for a gun and fired two shots off of the front porch of a Roundup Valley residence leading to an hour long standoff with authorities around 4 a.m. Saturday, according to a Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Office report.

William Martin, 25, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, battery, discharging a firearm in public and possession of a firearm while intoxicated.

One of those involved in the argument said Martin took a gun from atop a refrigerator, placing it in his pocket during an argument between three people, according to the report. As the argument continued, the victim left the house, hoping neighbors would hear the commotion and call authorities. One person hid on a side of the house, peeking around to see Martin standing on the front porch with a handgun.

As Martin stood on the porch, he raised the gun and fired two shots to the south. Martin then went back inside and continued arguing with the other person involved until authorities arrived, reports say.

Deputy Danny Miller was dispatched to the disturbance and arrived on the scene after the shots were fired. Miller said when he approached the residence he heard a commotion from inside and someone saying, “I’m not going to tell you where the bullets are.”

The deputy knocked on the front door and was informed Martin was in the house armed with a .22 caliber revolver.

The deputy ordered Martin to exit several times, saying Martin would not cooperate, according to the report. Approximately one hour and thirteen minutes later, Martin came out of the domicile and was arrested. A .22 caliber revolver was found in the attic.

Martin provided a breath sample at the Santa Rosa County Jail. The results yielded a .098 and a .105 breath alcohol content.

He was booked into the Santa Rosa County Jail and given no bond until his first appearance in court. He has since been released.
