Barktoberfest to be held on October 26

Make a date with your best furry friend and treat him or her to the most “paw-some” event in town!

Yes, the Pensacola Humane Society’s annual Barktoberfest is set for October 26 from 9 – 4 in Seville Square and Fountain Park.

Barktoberfest has become the most anticipated celebration of the year for dog lovers, with canine activities, contests, give-aways, gift basket raffles and vendors featuring pet toys, collars, leashes, clothing and an array of pet-themed gift items and accessories.

Start planning now because your favorite tail-waggin’ events, including contests for Best Trick, Best Costume, Best Kisser and the ever-popular Owner/Pet Look-Alike competition, will all be back again this year. It’s one of the most fun parts of the day, when pups and their humans take center stage to show off their talents. Prizes will be awarded to the first three finishers in each category. And don’t forget to catch the dachshund and mixed breed races and enter or root for your favorite canine.

Animal rescue organizations will also be on hand with adoptable dogs and plenty of information to help answer your questions about different breeds.

If your canine needs some spiritual encouragement  to help him behave better,  there will be two Blessings of the Animals, one at 11:30 am and the second at 1 pm. Local vets will provide information about products, animal care and other issues that affect the health of your pet.  Another special treat will be Five Flags Dog Training Club with their agility demos.

When you’ve worked up an appetite, visit our food vendors, who will be cooking up a varied selection of hearty meals and light snacks. Be sure to come by the Humane Society’s booth for freshly-grilled hamburgers and tasty hotdogs.  And your mouth will be watering when you see the delicious bake sale items made especially for Barktoberfest. Spot won’t go hungry either, as there will be an array of gourmet pooch treats to satisfy his cravings as well.

You won’t want to leave without at least one of our cool Barktoberfest t-shirts, designed by the Pensacola News Journal’s Andy Marlette, and our 2014 calendar, both of which make great gifts for animal lovers.

For the Pensacola, Humane Society Barktoberfest helps enforce our mission about the importance of spaying and neutering, preventing animal cruelty, and providing pet education programs aimed at addressing animal welfare issues in our community.

Through your support of this wonderful event and its dedicated sponsors, you are choosing to stand with us to make a difference in the lives of homeless animals.

Please plan to spend the day with us and with thousands of animal lovers and their beloved pets. There are sure to be lots of smiling faces and wagging tails!
