The Department of Business and Professional Regulation’s (DBPR) Division of Certified Public Accounting today encouraged accounting minority students across the state to apply for this year’s minority scholarships. The minority scholarships are awarded each year to students studying to become certified public accountants through the CPA Education Minority Assistance Program. The program was created in 1999 to encourage students to remain in higher education for the fifth year required to obtain a CPA license. More than $1 million has been awarded to date.
“The minority scholarships are a great way to assist future CPAs with the costs of school, and I believe all eligible students should apply for a scholarship,” said DBPR Secretary Ken Lawson. “Once these bright students have completed all of the requirements necessary for licensure, I also encourage them to stay and do business in Florida.”
Applications for the scholarship must be postmarked by June 1, 2013. For more information on the scholarship, including the application process, please visit http://www.myfloridalicense.com/dbpr/cpa/MinorityScholarship.html. A $5 portion from each individual and firm license fee funds the CPA Education Minority Assistance Program. Scholarship applicants can be awarded up to $6,000 per semester for a maximum of two semesters.
The Department of Business and Professional Regulation’s mission is to license efficiently and regulate fairly. The Department licenses and regulates more than one million businesses and professionals ranging from hotels and restaurants, real estate agents and accountants to veterinarians, contractors and cosmetologists.
