Girl's Basketball Camp underway in Milton

The Milton Community Center had a strong turnout for its first ever Girl’s Basketball Camp.

This free camp is open to girls in fourth through eighth grade with an emphasis on basic basketball skills such as dribbling, shooting, rebounding, and passing.

The camp got underway on June 4 and will continue throughout the month every Tuesday and Thursday from 6 – 7:30 p.m.

Thanks to the efforts of Community Center volunteer coaches Alonzo Samuels and Chris Gay, the ladies are learning and having fun while promoting girls basketball.

Besides promoting girls basketball and skills, another purpose of the program is to develop a girl’s basketball league at the Milton Community Center.

“We want to offer these young ladies an opportunity to learn the game and the opportunity to participate in game in a fun and competitive atmosphere,” said Milton Parks Director John Norton. “Basketball is a fun game, but unfortunately there are not a lot of opportunities offered to younger girls in the community.

“We want to work toward changing that.”

The Milton Community Center does have young women participate in its youth basketball program at this time, but the teams are co-ed.
