MILTON — Downtown Milton is now home to a candy and ice cream shop, bringing in a steady stream of business daily since opening on April 13, according to its owners.
Scoops Ice Cream and Sweets, located at 5237 South Willing Street, is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily and offers 32 flavors of Hershey’s ice cream, cups, cones, milkshakes, floats, sundaes, banana splits and a variety of toppings including Jelly Belly jelly beans.
Despite a near delay with the health department last week, the business opened as scheduled and the grand opening coincided with the Scratch Ankle Festival and Bands on the Blackwater.
Scoops’ owners, Amber and Robert Leek, say they came up with the idea last year and decided to go for it.
“We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the community,” Amber said.
Aside from ice cream, the shop offers treats such as chocolate dipped marshmallows and gourmet dipped apples. Amber said she was surprised at how many customers asked for non-dairy ice cream, so she ordered some.
“Someone suggested we do Italian ice, as well, so we might look into that,” Amber said.
The ice cream shop isn’t the only business the Leeks run. The parents of five children also own Leek Small Engine Repair on Bayberry Street. Robert — a U.S. Navy veteran — is also a Department of Defense contractor for DynCorp International at Naval Air Station Whiting Field.
Although they have busy schedules, Amber said they’ve been making it work and having fun. Their oldest son, Austin, is working as one of the managers, as is his girlfriend, Sarah. The couple’s 16-year-old twin boys also work at the store, and they are currently taking applications.
