LETTER: Four-laning Highway 90 would be an atrocity

Dear editor,

Voltaire once said, "Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities." In Milton "those" would be Jimmy Messick and his cohorts who are hysterically pedaling the absurd claim that widening Highway 90 to four lanes through downtown Milton will not cause irreparable detriment to our historic district, that the tremors caused by increased truck traffic will not weaken already fragile historic buildings, that attempting to move those old buildings will not cause their damage or destruction, that removing the buildings from their original site will not reduce their historic significance, that widening the highway from the present 30 feet to 82 feet will not make it less safe for pedestrians to cross, that the noise and pollution brought by hundreds more vehicles daily will not deter citizens from going downtown to dine, stroll, shop and visit, that it is alright to convert the precious few blocks of charm and tranquility that is our river walk and historic district into the same drab, unsightly commercial thoroughfare that is Hwy. 90 for 30 miles through Santa Rosa and Escambia counties.

Mr. Messick would have you believe absurdities. The atrocity would be a four-lane highway through downtown Milton.
