Dear Editor,
We want people to know about a telephone scam going on in our area. Last week I received a phone call from a young man who sounded like my grandson. He said he was calling from the Dominican Republic. We chatted for a few minutes and he told me one of his best friends was killed in a car accident. He told us how he came to the Dominican Republic and it was the friend’s family who paid for his trip and he is returning after the funeral but he had gotten into some trouble for a broken tail light on the highway. He said he wanted to speak to Grandpa in a private conversation about being arrested for having marijuana and he was being held for 5 weeks if someone didn’t pay for his bail. At this point we realized it was a scam. When the caller was told to call his parents for help he hung up the phone. We immediately called our daughter and was told our grandson was in school.
