5 questions with Milton High School's Mariah Bortolin

National Society for High School Scholars member, National Art Honor Society member and 28th Annual Milton Scholarship Pageant finalist Mariah Bortolin discusses academia and her post-high school plans.

MILTON — Mariah Bortolin, like many high school seniors, said she’s thinking about where to go to college and how to pay for it.

This is why, she said, she was grateful to see scholarship opportunities with her selection as a National Society for High School Scholars member.

She also placed fourth runner-up in the 28th Annual Milton Scholarship Pageant, representing the National Art Honor Society.

Here, Bortlin talks about future plans and more about her background.

What does this award mean to you?

It really helped me. I was offered so many scholarships for NSHSS members. I had to pay (to join) and I’m waiting to hear back from them. Senior year is all about (looking for) scholarships.

What exactly is the NAHS?

It’s the National Art Honor Society, basically an organization for artistic students at Milton High School with a passion. I’ve been in for two years. I got in the club to learn.

What is your artistic talent?

I’ve always liked drawing. I like (using) pencils and drawing flowers. It’s a hobby.

What are your post-high school plans?

I want to be a nurse. I come from a family of nurses. I’m going to attend Florida State University this summer, June 18, to get a head start. I’m going to major in nursing and specialize in anesthesia. It’s something that’s always interested me.

My sister is there; she’s been there two years. It’s comforting to have her there.

Tell me something most people don’t know about you.

I was born and raised in Rome, Italy. Half of my family is there. I attended Italian schools … and moved here at 12. I used to have a heavy accent. I go back to visit. I’m able to message friends in Italy with (the smart phone application) What’s App. My dad put me on to it.
