MILTON — City officials could soon be working with the Milton Housing Authority to make one or two portable buildings available for nonprofit organizations.
During Tuesday’s executive committee meeting, the City Council agreed to proceed with an agreement with the MHA to use one or both portable buildings on James Street as office space for local organizations.
“We have had several groups come up to us and say, ‘Hey, we are doing great things for the community and we are working hard … we need a space to work.’ The bottom line is that we just don’t have enough (space) in the community center to service everybody,” City Manager Brian Watkins said.
Such organizations needing accommodations include Men In Action and the Milton Sports Club.
Watkins said the agreement would allow the organizations to have their own space in which they could meet and maintain records.
Men In Action, a mentoring organization for area youths, offers community service, career development, life-skills development, tutoring and more to area youths.
While one of the two portable buildings is rarely used, according to Watkins, the other is occasionally used as a classroom for children in the housing area.
Watkins anticipates working with the MHA in providing any renovations to the older portable buildings.
This item will be part of Tuesday’s consent agenda during the regular council meeting scheduled for 5 p.m. at city hall.
