MILTON — Lori Dominey said she’s the type to support her fellow employees at General Electric Renewables whenever they have something to sell, like candy for their children’s school.

Every year, Dominey said she adopts rubber ducks for the Great Mill Town Duck Race.

This year, Dominey said she adopted four ducks from George Lassiter, a Blackwater Pyrate known as “Two Socks.” One of those ducks crossed the finish line first July 4 at the race, which came with a $1,500 first prize.

Dominey said she plans to use the money to help pay for her upcoming wedding.

Second-place winner Melissa Cody, who won $750, said she would bank her winnings; third-place winner Amanda Sakeikonis said she would use her $250 for road trips.

Blackwater Pyrates Capt. Ralph “Dragon” Palmer said this was one of the smoothest Duck Races they’ve held.

This was also the first time the Milton Fire Department rescue boat patrolled the river since $5,000 in upgrades were installed, paid for by the Pyrates.

Palmer said the investment was worth it.

“(It) kept the river manageable, safe, and under control,” he said. “Visibility was extraordinary.”
