MILTON — With Locklin Tech’s help, downtown Milton may soon have bicycle racks.
During this week’s Community Redevelopment Agency meeting, Public Works Director George Rials informed council of preliminary discussions with Locklin Tech to provide bicycle racks for the downtown area.
“I do have a response from the Locklin Technical Center,” Rials said. “They are willing to support that project as long as the city is willing to provide the materials.”
Kimi Gillis, Locklin’s marketing coordinator, said the labor would be done by the center’s high school welding program, which is in its second year.
“I think this will give us the opportunity to showcase the talent of our students,” Gillis said. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to do this.”
Gillis said the school has received a prototype drawing of what city officials would like to see built.
Bike racks would feature the city emblem, which Gillis said could be handled at the facility.
Soon, Gillis hopes to have proposal ready to present before the council.
Like Gillis, Council Member Ashley Lay said the bike racks would show area students’ craftsmanship.
“This is a good situation for us to show that we as a community are proud of Locklin Tech,” Lay said.
In addition, Lay said the bike racks could benefit residents interested in attending downtown community events, or those looking to visit the downtown region without getting into their vehicles.
“People can ride their bikes to the area, stop and look around and do some exploring,” she said.
