MILTON — An upcoming workshop will focus on prescribed burns.
The event — 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Blackwater River State Forest’s Bear Lake Pavilion — will provide an overview on uses of fire in natural resource management and planning necessary for a successful prescribed burn.
A burn demonstration will be planned and executed, if conditions allow.
The tentative agenda is:
●8:30 a.m.: Sign-in, meet and greet at Bear Lake Pavilion
●9 a.m.: Welcome and introduction, with Mike Hudson, of the Florida Forest Service, and Chris Demers, of the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences School of Forest Resources and Conservation
●9:15 a.m.: “Why Use Fire?” with Maria Wilson, FFS
●10 a.m. Prescribed Burning Factors and Issues, with David Smith, FFS
●10:45 a.m.: Break
●11 a.m. “Plan it! — The Who, What, Where, When, Why, How,” with Charles “CC” Christensen, FFS
●11:45 a.m.: Prescribed Burn Associations and Cost-share Assistance, with Arlo Kane, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
●12 p.m.: Lunch; thank sponsors
●1 p.m.: “Executing the Burn: Equipment and Firing Techniques — in the field,” with Gary Holley, FFS and all staff
●3 p.m.: Conclusion, evaluation and adjourn
