BECAUSE YOU ASKED: What does that light mean?

MILTON — A traffic light at the Highway 90-Avalon Boulevard intersection is causing some confusion.

Where these streets meet, vehicles are traveling from Interstate 10 and the south end of the county going north on Avalon, drivers going to and from Pace and Pensacola on Highway 90, and students and others going in and out of Pensacola State College on the north side of Highway 90.

A pair of traffic lights at the intersection, for traffic turning right from Avalon Boulevard to Highway 90, show red and green arrows for turning. Additionally, a sign between them says, "No turn on red." This sign is a light, which is sometimes off and sometimes on.

The Florida Department of Transportation states, "A red right arrow means that you must come to a complete stop at the marked stop line or before moving into the crosswalk or intersection. After stopping, you may turn right on the red arrow at most intersections if the way is clear. Some intersections display a 'no turn on red' sign, which you must obey."

Santa Rosa County Public Works Director Steve Furman said he rides a motorcycle and almost had an accident at this intersection. Furman said he needed to make a right turn after the intersection to get to work and a car started making a right turn into traffic just as he needed to slow down and turn right. He said he was able to honk and stop in time.

After observing the light in question, Furman said, "The illuminated sign that says, 'No right turn' is only active when active left-hand turns are being made out of Pensacola State College going east on Highway 90. Then the light turns off.

"I feel 100 percent confident that right turns on red are allowed unless the light is illuminated."
