MILTON — With his final season playing baseball at Pace High School approaching, Andrew Bates has signed a scholarship with the University of South Alabama.

Here, the 17-year-old center fielder talks about his decision.

Why did you sign with the University of South Alabama?

They are really close to home. I got the opportunity to play a bunch of tournaments there my sophomore and junior years in high school. One game after my sophomore summer, I guess it was just a good game and I got noticed then. They are just a great program.

Have you decided on your major?

I am unsure of my degree right now. I am kind of leaning towards civil engineering. I know it’s going to be tough with a baseball schedule in college, but I am going to try and make something work, definitely.

Which lessons from Pace High School will help you at South Alabama?

I have learned that the best competition is in the South, and that is the way it is for a reason. Every team we play in high school is good, and it is going to be a whole different level in college, and I just can’t wait to get up there and start playing on a higher level.

Most of our coaching staff has had pro experience and they definitely have passed on a lot of knowledge to me and helped me succeed as a baseball player.

How will you contribute to USA’s baseball team?

I kind of like to think of myself as a versatile player. I can play anywhere in the outfield, I am open to whatever the coach thinks I need to play and I am ready to go and compete over there as a freshman.

Just working harder and getting up every day with the right attitude to make myself better. I know I have to go in there and feel entitled to nothing and prepare to earn everything. I can’t wait to get there.

What are some of your fondest memories playing for the Patriots?

In my sophomore year, we won districts against our rivals, and that is probably one of the most exciting times for players and coaches. We really bonded there and kept moving forward into the playoffs. It was a good moment.

It’s your final baseball season at Pace High School — what are you thinking?

To have as much fun as possible; you know, I’m not going to be around these guys a whole lot. Time is winding down and I have to take advantage of all of these moments with all of my buddies.
