Central's Stewart is Jefferson Davis bound

MILTON — Central High School senior Lacee Stewart’s eyes filled with tears as she watched a standing-room-only crowd of supporters gather to witness the moment for which she long awaited: to continue her love of playing softball after her high school graduation.

Family, friends, teammates, past and present coaches, as well as  Stewart’s church family recently packed Central to see Stewart accept and sign an athletic scholarship to Jefferson Davis Community College.

Stewart’s high school coach, Nick Golden, said she was a valuable part of Jaguar softball as well as a leader among the Jaguar student population. “… She is a well-respected athlete and person,” Golden said.

Stewart, named the Most Valuable Player for her sophomore and junior seasons of Central softball, will start her senior year Feb. 14 against Booker T. Washington High School.

“I just want to have a great season as a senior and then go right into a super college-level experience at JDCC,” she said.

Stewart pitches as well as plays in field for the Jaguars. Assistant Coach Ed Johnson, of the National Junior College Athletic Association JDCC softball team, said he looks forward to working with Stewart and having her talent added to their squad.
