Parks release ranger programs schedule

GULF BREEZE — Gulf Islands National Seashore announces its summer (June through August) ranger programs schedule for the Florida Areas of the park.  All programs are free and are subject to change without notification. There is an entrance fee to the Fort Pickens and Fort Barrancas Areas.

Fort Barrancas Area

Hours are 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Thursday-Monday.

  1. Advanced Redoubt: Legacy of Brick & Mortar is 11 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Meet at the entrance to Advanced Redoubt. The 45-minute program involves walking on uneven surfaces, sandy walkways, and steps.
  2. Fort Barrancas: Bastions on the Bluffs is 2 p.m. Thursdays through Mondays. Meet at the Fort Barrancas Visitor Center. The 45-minute program involves walking on uneven surfaces, sandy walkways, and steps.

Fort Pickens Area

The Fort Pickens Discovery Center hours  are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily.

  1. Snorkeling in the Sound is 9:30 a.m. Thursdays and Fridays and 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Saturdays through Mondays. Meet at the Battery Worth Picnic Area. It is a 60-minute program. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Snorkel equipment is available for the first 25 participants.
  2. Nature Walk: Life on a Barrier Island is 10:30 a.m. daily. Meet at the Fort Pickens Bookstore. The 45-minute program; involves walking on uneven surfaces, sandy walkways, and steps.
  3. School of the Soldier is 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays; and 10 a.m. 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturdays & Sundays. The 30-minute program is accessible. It includes firing demonstrations when staff available. Meet at the Fort Pickens Bookstore.
  4. Fort Pickens: Stories of Brick and Mortar is 1:30 p.m. daily and other times as posted. Meet at the Fort Pickens Bookstore. The 30-minute program involves walking on uneven surfaces, sandy walkways, and steps.
  5. Creature Feature is 3:30 p.m. Thursday's through Monday. Meet at the Fort Pickens Bookstore. The 30-minute program involves walking on uneven surfaces, sandy walkways, and steps.

Santa Rosa Island

  1. Sunset walks are 6:30 p.m. Fridays through Sundays. Meet at the parking lot across from Beach Access 15A.

    The 45-minute program involves walking on uneven surfaces, sandy walkways, and steps.

  2. Stargazing is 8 p.m. June 28, 7:45 p.m. July 26, and 7:15 p.m. Aug. 30. Meet at Battery Worth Picnic Pavilion.

Perdido Key Area

Hours are 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. March through October. 

Santa Rosa Day Use Area

Hours are 8:30 a.m. to sunset.

Okaloosa Day Use Area

Hours are 8:30 a.m. to sunset.
