MILTON — On March 5, Milton hosted Pace and Escambia High schools in a modified exhibition JV track meet on its resurfaced track.

The exhibition meets are a new approach to competitions scheduled during a weekday and Santa Rosa schools are trying it out this year. In this type of meet only half the events compete during a weekday competition. The remaining events are completed at the next weekday meet.

"A normal track meet can run from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.," said Joe Austin, Milton’s head coach.

Splitting a track meet over two days gives students more time for other activities, such as homework. The other advantage to the shortened exhibition meet is it reduces injury and gives the young athletes more time to recover.

The second half of this meet is scheduled for Tuesday at Pace High School.
