Dear editor,
We just honored our veterans on the 11th, the same date the Mayflower Compact was enacted in my home state, here below quoted:
IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN. We, whose names are underwritten, the Loyal Subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord King James, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, &c. Having undertaken for the Glory of God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith, and the Honour of our King and Country, a Voyage to plant the first Colony in the northern Parts of Virginia; Do by these Presents, solemnly and mutually, in the Presence of God and one another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil Body Politick, for our better Ordering and Preservation, and Furtherance of the Ends aforesaid: And by Virtue hereof do enact, constitute, and frame, such just and equal Laws, Ordinances, Acts, Constitutions, and Officers, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the general Good of the Colony; unto which we promise all due Submission and Obedience. IN WITNESS whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names at Cape-Cod the eleventh of November, in the Reign of our Sovereign Lord King James, of England, France, and Ireland, the eighteenth, and of Scotland the fifty-fourth, Anno Domini; 1620.
The American’s Creed for which patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes reads “ . . . it is my duty to my country to Love it; to Support its Constitution; to obey its laws; to Respect its Flag; and to defend it against all enemies.” (Accepted by the U.S. House of Representatives April 3, 1918).
Speaking of Constitutions, how does this grab you? Those of Delaware, Pennsylvania, et al shared the conviction that “Every person who shall be chosen a member of either house or appointed to any office or place of trust, before taking his seat, or entering upon the execution of his office, shall take the following oath: ‘I . . . do profess faith in God the Father and in Jesus Christ His only Son, and in the Holy Ghost, one God, blessed forevermore, and I do acknowledge the holy scriptures of the Old and New Testament to be given by divine inspiration.’”
North Carolina’s reads, “No person who shall deny the being of God or the truth of the Christian religion or the divine authority, either of the Old or New Testaments, or who shall hold religious principles incompatible with the freedoms and safety of the State, shall be capable of holding any office or place of trust or profit in the civil department within the State.”
The Supreme Court 1892 noted that each of the 44 states then, had some kind of “God-centered declaration” and “. . . faith in the Almighty was essential . . . America could only move forward as “one nation under God.” Hallelujah!
All Americans should take note and pray we return to God.
